Residents of Legal’s thriving community have the best of both worlds – life in a rural setting, yet close enough to Edmonton to make use of the big city amenities.
Located 50 km north of Edmonton on Highway 651 (just 3 km east of Highway 2, the provinces main north-south artery), it is a prime agricultural region. Legal has witnessed remarkable growth in the past decade.
Town Councillors here are justifiably optimistic over the future of Legal, forecasting “more continued, steady growth” for the Town, based on the stability of the agricultural sector and the alternative lifestyle to Edmonton that is available here.
There are numerous reasons for Legal’s popularity in recent years, but first and foremost is the pace and quality of life in the Town. Legal is a quiet, friendly community with a lifestyle all its own.
The Town’s ethnic and cultural background has also proven to be a popular attraction. Because we have a large French speaking population, many Francophones have chosen to live here.
Legal is home to “Fete Au Village,” an annual two-day festival held the last weekend in July, reviving the French culture in Legal’s pioneers.This celebration which started in 1962, brings together people of varied nationalities who work for the good of the community through organizations and clubs. People come from across Alberta to participate in the festivities and enjoy French-Canadian cuisine and hospitality.
Roman Catholic Church services are offered on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am – Bi-lingual.
The rolling topography surrounding Legal makes for excellent facilities for outdoor sports such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking.
The Town offers modern conveniences: hotel, restaurants and lounge, grocery store, garage and car dealership, convenience store, car wash, laundromat, bank, beauty salons and many more.
A variety of excellent recreational facilities include an Arena, a four sheet Curling complex, Ball Diamonds, Soccer Field, a RV Park, Day Use Park, Fish Pond and walking trails. The Legal Recreation Programming Committee administers Legal’s recreational facilities and organizes a variety of programs.
Legal School offers education from K-9 in English. As well there is a playschool program at Legal School for 3 & 4 year olds. Legal also has a Francophone School, Ecole Citadelle, which offers K-9. Francophone playschool is also offered for 3 & 4 year olds at Ecole Citadelle. Grades 10-12 students attend a modern new Hi-Tech School just minutes away at the Morinville Community High School. Francophone students have the opportunity to attend Maurice Lavallee, a Francophone High School in Edmonton.
Legal has a volunteer fire department that services a 13 km radius around the town. While Legal does not have a hospital, because of its proximity to St. Albert and Edmonton, the medical facilities within the community are excellent. The Legal Ambulance Service is also staffed by volunteers and responds to emergencies within a 13 km radius of the town. Volunteers from both the fire and ambulance departments are very active and dedicated to the community.
Police protection in the Town is provided by an RCMP detachment in Morinville, 17 km south on Highway 2.
A wide array of health and medical services is provided to Legal residents, including preschool clinics, home care programs and public health inspections and dental clinic. The Associate Medical Clinic operates in Morinville.
Housing for the elderly is provided at the Chateau Sturgeon Senior Citizens’ Home, a lodge funded by the Sturgeon Foundation, which provides individual rooms for seniors not requiring extensive nursing care.
Sunset and Sunrise Villa self-contained units are available to the seniors who want to maintain their independence while not having to be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of a house.
The Town’s elderly are encouraged to make use of the recreation facilities offered in the Club 60 Roses, a local organization for senior citizens. The Legal & District Lions Transportation Committee offers a bus service for the community including seniors and handicapped.
